Warning signs include talk of wanting to die or feeling hopeless, withdrawing from people and activities, increased drinking or drug use, extreme mood swings, giving away prized possessions, sleeping far too much or too little, reckless behavior, and saying goodbye or settling affairs.
- Ask directly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Asking does not plant the idea.
- Listen without judgment. Let them know you care.
- Help them connect: offer to call 988 (press 1) together or go to the VA with them.
- Stay with them. If there is immediate danger, do not leave them alone — call 911.
