Understanding VA Pension Benefits

VA pension is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime veterans. The Veterans Pension program provides supplemental income to ensure that veterans' total income meets a minimum level. This benefit is needs-based and the amount paid depends on your countable income.

To qualify, you must have served on active duty for at least 90 days with at least one day during a wartime period. You must be age 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled. Your yearly family income and net worth must meet certain limits set by Congress. Additionally, Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits provide additional monthly pension to veterans who need help with daily activities or are housebound.
